Jace and Glo were already heading inside the Bermuda Triangle PADA Station early the next morning when I pulled to a stop in front of the ancient hut. Seeing me, Jace waited at the door for me to get out and walk past him. Laughing, I reached out and snatched the box of goodies from Seashell Sweets Bakery out of his hand.

“Is this the reason you like me?” he mused. “Because I bring in pastries on the mornings you don’t stop by the bakery yourself?”

Still grinning, I shrugged and headed for the table pushed against the wall where coffee, hot tea, and water were kept, along with an assortment of snacks. “It’s not the main reason…but it doesn’t hurt.”

When PADA had taken over a few months back—due to the retirement of the previous sheriff—they’d given the building a remodel. Well, they’d given half the building a remodel. The main floor still had the same outdated look of cement floor, cream walls that were once white, mismatched desks and chairs…and the unmistakable gleam of steel bars from the one jail cell we had. There were two small rooms in the back—one was a restroom, and the other was an interview room. But in order for PADA to entice Dr. Bowers to move her makeshift office from Splash Island to Neptune Oasis, PADA had to get a little more serious. Add in the fact they needed a top-notch forensics person to hire, and they knew they’d need state-of-the-art equipment if they wanted the best of the best. Which is exactly what they did. PADA added four hundred square feet upstairs for both Doc Bowers and Neil Thatcher to work, and they’d even given them the most modern equipment available on the market. They’d also given Nana and me our own laptops…not that we used them much.

“Grab you some coffee, Isla,” Nana said. “You’re gonna need it to get through the day.”

“Did I keep you up?” I asked, grabbing a biodegradable cup from the table and pouring some coffee.

“Not too bad.” Nana turned from her pile of folders against the wall and ambled over to her desk. “I think I finally fell back asleep around three this morning.”

I groaned and opened the bakery box to see my choices. “Sorry, Nana.”

“You couldn’t sleep?” Jace asked, snatching a lavender-lemon madeleine from the box. “Thinking about the case?”

I sighed, sprinkled some cinnamon in my coffee, and took a tentative sip. “Sort of. Okay, I was thinking about the house.”

Jace chuckled. “You still want it.”

He said it as fact…not a question.

“I do. Isn’t that horrible? I mean, I only saw the living room and kitchen. The two bedrooms could be disastrous—holes in the floor and walls—and I think I’d still want it.” I snatched up a cranberry-orange madeleine. “Is that weird?”

“Not at all,” Jace said.

“It’s sort of weird,” Glo said.

I turned to shoot her a death glare…and burst out laughing. “What on earth happened to you?”

Glo looked down at herself and grinned. “I didn’t have time to wash off.
